Toggle Switch
The easiest way of wiring up your controller is to a toggle switch. The way I normally run the switch is to ground.
So when you toggle between the on and off positions you are just turning the ground for the solenoid on/off.
The solenoid has two wires and the polarity does not matter, meaning you can hook either one to positive/negative
I usually wire it as shown in the diagram below but you can choose to wire it either sending ground or 12v from the switch, that is completely your call.
